Bucs Bullpenning Again

Michael Feliz Gets Start for Pirates vs Los Angles

May 24, 2019 - 6:07 pm

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Coming off of a big win to avoid a sweep against Colorado on Thursday afternoon, Pittsburgh will open a three game series at home against the two time defending National League champion Dodgers (32-18). The Pirates (25-22) are coming off of arguably their best offensive performances of the season, where they outscored the Rockies 14-6 in a game that featured homeruns from four different Buccos.

Tonight, right hander Michael Feliz will make his first career start in the big leagues for the Pirates as he is set to serve as the opener in Pittsburgh’s new bullpenning strategy. Feliz has pitched as a relief pitcher in the big leagues over the past four seasons but has only made one career appearance in the first inning, which was in 2016 with the Houston Astros. Feliz has been pitching well as of late, holding opponents to no runs in his last four outings. Overall this season, Feliz is 2-0 with a 4.63 earned run average (ERA). This season the Pirates are 1-1 in games they have elected to use bullpenning, rather than go with a traditional starting pitcher.

Opposing Feliz and those who will follow will be right hander, Walker Buhler. In nine starts this season, Buhler has gone 4-1 with a 3.83 ERA. In his last time out Buhler was dealt his first loss of the year, allowing four runs, just one earned, on seven hits and no walks in 6.0 innings of work. Buhler is known for his strong arm with 62% of his pitches thrown this season clocking in at 95 miles per hour or faster.

The Bucs will take on the Dodgers twice more this weekend before heading to the Queens city for a Memorial day double-header against the Reds. They will then play Cincinnati twice more before returning back to PNC Park to begin a four game set against the Milwaukee Brewers.
