PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates are 5-24 since the All Star Break, they were 2.5 games out of first place in the NL Central before the All Star Break. Pirates Insider Jason Mackey opened up on The PM Team about how we have heard from Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington, but will we ever hear how upset Bob Nutting is about this product?

Listen to your team news NOW.

“I’ve been told he won’t be speaking until towards the end of the season,” said Mackey.

It would mean a lot to the fans and media if Bob Nutting came out and said that he’s mad and frustrated with this product.

“Aren’t fans going to fire back at Nutting though?” said Mackey. “No matter what the guy says people are just going to come back at him and say you should spend more money.”

As for the rest of this season what should fans be excited about?

“Mitch Keller has to pitch reasonably well. He’s going to be in this starting rotation the rest of the year so I think his starts alone should be worth watching," said Mackey.

Huntington called the team young and inexperienced on his show this weekend.

“They’re going to be young and inexperienced, they’re in a position where they can’t be all young. The catching position they’re not all young there. I like what Stallings has done but he’s not a starter. Same with the rotation. Other than Keller they’re not young.”

Huntington kept trying to fall on the sword that this struggling team is his fault.

“I get where Neal is coming from, they’re getting decent production from younger guys. But he did build a roster that is flawed and has holes. Why is this team not pitching well? To me you need to look at overhauling this whole thing and ask how are we developing guys?”

With this team Huntington has significant financial constraints where he can’t keep up with teams like the Dodgers. But when you have a team that picks high in the draft and continues to draft poorly, you have to ask yourself are people’s jobs on the line?

“If you’re not going to spend money at the Major League Level, you’ve gotta be good at other places and there are teams that have been able to do this but the Pirates have not. The farm system isn’t good enough, they’ve missed on way too many players, guys they looked at and thought ‘Yes we think he’s going to be a part of our future!’ and they’ve been wrong!" said Mackey.
