PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has benched Starling Marte for Monday night’s game against Atlanta due to lack of effort yesterday in a 2-1 win against the Chicago Cubs.

Marte slipped early during Sunday’s game and got up and Hurdle said he didn’t think the effort was there.

“I thought there could’ve been better effort to finish the play,” said Hurdle.

Through a translator Marte said he didn’t want to get injured.

“Sometimes when you slip and you try to force it you can pull and injury and I’m just trying to be safe right now, trying to be healthy for the rest of the season so I didn’t want to risk it.”

Marte added he understand why Hurdle made the decision.

Adam Frazier will replace Marte in center field.
