Pittsburgh (93.7 The Fan) - Nick Gonzales got a first-hand look at PNC Park for the first time and is excited to think he'll be playing there sometime in the not-so-distant future.  Gonzales signed his contract two weeks after the Pirates made him their first-round selection.

"It's been so awesome, so jaw-dropping to walk into the Park and see how beautiful it is, " Gonzales said. "To see the city right behind centerfield, the Clemente bridge was unbelievable.  Getting able to step on the field was incredible for me.  You can go to a park and see how beautiful it is, but it's a little different when you're actually on the field, so for me that was really special."

Gonzales, who received a $5,432,400 bonus as the seventh overall selection, won't predict when he'll be playing games in Pittsburgh.  And if the Pirates spelled out their immediate plans for him, he wasn't divulging that information.

"I'm just going to do pretty much the same thing that I've been doing the whole quarantine, just training and getting ready for whatever is next, whether it's a week or a few months from now.  Whenever anything is up and ready, I'll be ready to play."

Gonzales said he's been learning about the Pirates present and past.  In fact, he assigned himself  homework.

"My dad purchased for me a Roberto Clemente book, so I've got to read that, " Gonzales said.  "It's a really long book, but I have to get it finished before I get back out here again."

One thing Gonzales already knows is that Clemente's number 21 is retired, so he won't get the number he wore at New Mexico State.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said they are thrilled to add Gonzales to the Pirates family.

"Nick has been an elite performer at every level of his baseball career," Cherington said.  "Nick has a broad skill set which allows him to impact multiple areas of the game. Just as importantly, Nick has demonstrated a deep passion for the game and for learning and improvement. We believe those qualities will allow him to continue finding new levels of performance and, one day, to become a valuable member of our Major League team. We welcome Nick and his family to the Pirates.”
