Pirates Open Up 3-Game Series Against Milwaukee Brewers

1st Place Brewers Make 1st Trip To PNC Park This Season

June 18, 2018 - 4:34 pm

After taking 2 of 3 from the Reds to open up this homestand for their first series win in a couple weeks, the Pirates welcome the 1st Place Milwaukee Brewers to PNC Park for 3-games beginning Monday night.  The Brewers enter the series with a record of 42-39 and a half game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central. The Pirates enter the series with a record of 35-36 and sit 7 games back of the Brewers.

Jose Osuna is back with the club and available off the bench. Jose Osuna was hitting .351 with 6 doubles, a homer and 12 RBI this month with Indiapolis.

"He's (Osuna) gone down there again, he's done his work, he's swung the bat well, he's continued to get a game here in the outfield, a few games at first and still mixing in at third," said Hurdle. "He's game ready to play and to hit."

Hurdle said there will be plenty of opportunities to utilize him in the starting lineup and off the bench over the coming weeks with a couple of left handed starters and potential matchups against relievers

Richard Rodriguez has been activated off the DL and Dovydas Neverauskas has been optioned back to Indianapolis.

"He's (Neverauskas) continued to honestly self evaluate and it comes down to pitch execution," said Hurdle.  "When he hasn't executed pitches he has paid the price up here with damage done off the (opponents') bat."

When asked about the line between AAA and MLB for pitchers who have a lot of success in AAA and struggle at times early in the careers in the big leagues.

"It's a large gap," said Hurdle.  "Take this (Milwaukee) lineup over here today and take their AAA lineup.  There are safety nets in a AAA lineup that you can pitch through and around.  Up here, there are no safety nets in most big league lineups.  He is in a large group of people that have really good stuff, that if they don't exceute they get hit hard."
