Pirates Open Up 5-Game Series Against Milwaukee

Brewers Are 11.5 Games Up On Pirates In NL Central

July 12, 2018 - 4:51 pm

After taking 2 of 3 from the Washington Nationals, the Pirates are now 3 and 3 on this final homestand before the All Star Break as they get set to open up a 5-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

PREGAME MEETING WITH CLINT

Austin Meadows has been absent from the Pirates starting lineup the past few games and Clint Hurdle discussed the reasons why this afternoon prior to the game.  "He's healthy, he's working on some things.  The offensive numbers have dropped off against both right and left handed pitching and we're getting to a spot where he needs to play and that's why we are taking a look at Jordan (Luplow) to see what he can provide."  They will discuss what to do with Meadows internally whether to work things out here with the Pirates or back in Indianapolis.  And there is now specific timeline right now with what to do with Meadows.

With a doubleheader on Saturday, Hurdle was asked about how he will use the bullpen in this series with the doubleheader.  "We'll manage today's game to win today's game and tomorrow's game we'll manage it to win tomorrow's game and what we have left we'll deal with the doubleheader.  We get to add a 26th man for the doubleheader Saturday."  Hurdle adds that with only 1 game after the doubleheader day with the All Star Break coming up helps with the decision making throughout the series.

ON THE MOUND

Jameson Taillon will take the mound tonight for the Pirates in the series opener.  Taillon is 5-7 on the year with 4.05 ERA and coming off a six and two-thirds inning performance against the Phillies where he gave up three runs in the Pirates 3-2 loss to the Phillies on Saturday.  The Brewers will send LHP Wade Miley to the mound who is coming into this game 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA.

The probable pitching matchups for the rest of the series are:

Friday: Junior Guerra (MIL) vs Nick Kingham (PIT)

Saturday (DH): Game 1 - TBA vs TBA, Game 2 - TBA vs TBA

Sunday: Jhoulys Chacin (MIL) vs Joe Musgrove (PIT)

LOOKING UP AT THE BREWERS
