Pirates Open Up 7-Game Homestand Against Phillies

After this 3-game weekend series against Philadelphia, the Pirates host St.Louis for 4

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Pirates went into the All Star Break taking 2 of 3 from the Milwaukee Brewers at PNC Park and were 2.5 games out of 1st place in the NL Central.  

Coming out of the break, however, was a completely different story as the Pirates were swept in a 3-game series in Chicago and lost 2 of 3 in St.Louis and now return to PNC Park after a 1-5 road trip now 6.5 games back in the NL Central and 4.5 games back of an NL Wild Card spot.

The Pirates open up this 7-game homestand with 3 against the Philadelphia Phillies who the Pirates are 4 games behind in the Wild Card Race. After the 3 games against Philadelphia, the St.Louis Cardinals come to PNC Park for a 4-game set as the Pirates are also 4 games behind the Cardinals in the standings.


Before the Pirates open this homestand and series against the Phillies, Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle spoke with the assembled media about Josh Bell resetting with the off day Thursday and pinch hit only appearance Wednesday, Richard Rodriguez looking more like he did last season, the importance of fastball command in the game today, what Jordan Lyles has worked on since his last outing in Chicago, injuries updates on Keone Kela and Francisco Cervelli and Adam Frazier's improved defense.

Altoona, AA (50-43/0.5 GB of 1st): The Curve are 15-11 in the second half of the season and 5.5 games back as they continue a 4-game series in Bowie Friday night at 7:05 pm after falling in game one of the series 1-0. Pitcher Matt Eckelman is 1-2 with a 3.48 ERA in 32 games (1 start) with 18 saves in 33.2 IP with 31 strikeouts and a 1.40 WHIP

Bradenton, A (51-43/6 GB of 1st): The Marauders are15-13 in the second half of the season and 7 games back as they open up a 3-game series in Tampa at 6:30 pm Friday night. Pitcher Nick Mears is 4-1 with a 3.20 ERA in in 19 games with 1 save in 25.1 IP with 38 strikeouts and a 0.99 WHIP.
