PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- Pirates starting pitcher Joe Musgrove has gotten off to a tremendous start to the 2019 season, posting a 1.59 ERA with 26 strikeouts through his first four starts.

He joined The Fan Morning Show on Thursday ahead of the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks and talked about how much being a part of this strong Pirates starting rotation means to him.

"I've never had a chemistry quite like what we do here," said Musgrove. "I was around some pretty talented pitchers and some pretty big names when I was with Houston and having [Brian] McCann as a catcher I sure did learn a lot about myself. But I feel like the camaraderie and the bond I have amongst this group of starters is like nothing I've ever experienced."

"Not only the level of fun that we have playing the game and learning from each other but the knowledge that's shared, we're constantly talking. After starts, we're sharing information on what we saw from the hitters, what they thought we could have done differently, we're talking in between innings on sequencing and on approaching and what we're seeing. We're going in with mindsets of each series of the first guy setting the tone on what we want to establish early in the series and that allows the other starters to pitch successfully based on their game."

Musgrove aims to lead by example and says the entire pitching rotation feels like they have the chance to be leaders. Musgrove is excited to be going up against the reigning NL champion LA Dodgers in his next start. Not only that, but going directly up against their ace, Clayton Kershaw.

"When I go out and pitch, it's a competition of me versus the other starter, that's how I look it. If I can outlast that other starter I think we're going to have a good chance to win the game," said Musgrove. "I understand that it is Clayton Kershaw and there's a big name behind that face but I've been throwing the ball well this year. I feel prepared, I'm ready to go, I know this lineup pretty well so I like my chances."

By the way, if Clint Hurdle would have asked him to run for Jung Ho Kang in the 9th inning on Sunday, despite him starting the next day, Musgrove would have been all about it.

"100%. I don't think that has too much affect on me. As starters, we run more than anybody so my legs are pretty well conditioned. I understand it's more important for me to go out and give them a strong start the next day but I mean that stuff excites me, man. Any chance I have to get in the game and contribute, I'm there."
