The Pirates split the squad and got splintered – 14-1 by the Braves at LECOM Park and 13-5 by the Orioles in Sarasota.

In Bradenton, Trevor Williams breezed through the first 3 innings but in the 4th gave up an RBI double to Johan Camargo then a 2-run bomb to Dustin Peterson. “Out of the hand it was a homer,” Williams sighed. “If I throw the pitch (slider) the way I’m supposed to throw it he’s striking out there but I let up on it and he took it for a ride.” Ov.erall, Williams was satisfied with the outing.  Audio attached - good stuff about pticher-hitter matchups at the 3-minute mark

Kevin Seagrist made his first Grapefruit League appearance and, after giving up a leadoff double, struck out the side in the 7th.  Seagrist is a little behins as a lates-gnee but feels he is already up to speed.  “It has never taken me long to get ready in terms of facing hitters,” he said, “it’s just a matter of getting more in synch and getting sharper.”

Seagrist was followed by another lefty, Josh Smoker who is basically battling for the same spot, struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.  Smoker has missed his last scheduled appearance with illness.

Jody Mercer hit his first home run.  Colin Moran went 2-for-2 with a walk and is batting .360

Meanwhile in Sarasota, Corey Dickerson and Francisco Cervelli had RBI doubles in the first inning but then Chad Kuhl gave up 8 runs. 4 scored in the first on 3 home runs. Then, after a 1-2-3 second inning Kuhl got into trouble again in the third loading the bases on a walk, 2 singles then a 4-pich walk to force home a run. That was it for Kuhl but not for the Orioles who scored 6 more runs after Tyler Eppler replaced Kuhl.

Not all the pitching was dreadful. Goerge Kontos retired the side in order his inning while Michael Feliz pitched 2 perfect innings.

Starling Marte had 2 hits, including an RBI triple. Jose Osuna homered. First baseman Will Craig, the1st round pick in 2016 was 2-for-2 off the bench

The Bucs will play the Blue Jays in Dunedin Sunday. Clay Holmes is scheduled to be the first of 6 Pirates pitchers, none of whom project to the 25-man roster.
