A couple of Pirates prospects were honored after impressive weeks.  Starter Nick Kingham named the International League Pitcher of the Week while first baseman Will Craig honored as the Eastern League Player of the Week.

On June 14, Kingham retired the first 19 batters of the game before giving up an infield hit.  The righty ended up giving up two hits, no walks and 6 strikeouts.

In Triple A, Kingham is 3-1 with a 1.67 ERA and opponents are hitting .191 against him.  In MLB starts, Kingham is 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 35 innings.

So, would Kingham get a call back up to the majors?

“Unfortunately for Nick, we are in a situation we have six guys that we believe can help us win major league games as starting pitchers right now,” said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington.  “It’s a tough situation, Nick just needs to dominate his controllables and continue to grow and get better.  He’s done a really nice job of just showing up and competing.”

The righty-hitting Craig was the Pirates first round pick two years ago after hitting .379 with 66 RBI during his junior league at Wake Forest.  Craig has raised his average 33 points in the last 10 games and has 11 homers on the season with 50 RBI with AA Altoona.

Craig hit only eight home runs combined in 186 minor-league games before this season.
