Ivan Nova allowed 3 runs in his 2 innings then closer Felipe Rivero allowed 3 runs without completing his scheduled inning as the Pirates lost to the Red Sox, 13-2 in Bradenton. They are now 0-3-1 this spring.

Nova allowed 3 hits including a home run to Rusney Castillo but wasn’t all that worked up about it. “Everything was right,” Nova said. “Feels really good to be the first one; the command was not as good as you want but it’s the first one so I’m good with it.”

Two of the runs off Nova were unearned while all 3 off Rivero were unearned thanks to errors by David Freese then Erich Weiss who replaced Freese at third base.

In between, Jamison Taillon threw 2 scoreless innings – 1 hit, 3 strikeouts and no walks. “Felt crisp, the ball felt good coming out,” Taillon said, “I feel definitely ahead of where I was at this time last year.”

Sean Rodriguez started in left field (as newcomer Corey Dickerson gets acclimated) and Rodriguez hit a bomb over everything in left.  Starling Marte went 2-for-3.

Steven Brault is scheduled to start Tuesday against the Braves in Orlando.
