The Pirates started off their four game home series against the San Diego Padres on Thursday night with a 5-4 victory. The night started out strong with Chad Khul having four strike outs by the second inning. The Padres had issue's with their outfield defense throughout the game that cost them in some key points. An error in the bottom of the seventh inning by the Padres allowed for Gregory Polanco to score the tie breaking run and give the Pirates a one run lead that they would keep for the remainder of the game.

The evening was a strong night for Pirates pitchers with Chad Kuhl and Steven Brault having overall strong nights that allowed the Pirates to have a strong night offensively and that let them keep the game within reach in some moments where they needed to keep it together. Offensivley the Buccos were led by Josh Bell and Sean Rodriguez who each had two hits and drove in a run.

Edgar Santana improved to 2-0 on the season getting the win while the Padres Matt Strahm was charged with the loss. The Pirates will be back in action tomorrow night in the second game of their four game series against the Padres at 7:05 at home in PNC Park.
