Jeff Capel hires two former Jamie Dixon assistants

Pitt basketball coach Jeff Capel has finalized his coaching staff, bringing back two of Jamie Dixon’s former assistants.  Rejoining Pitt basketball is Brian Regan as the director of basketball operations, after eight years in that role with Dixon.

Capel also named former Dixon grad assistant Jason Richards as the director of student-athlete development.  The son of former Pitt player Tom Richards will assist the staff in film breakdown, practice planning and game analytics as well as helping the players with the off-court demands of college.

Capel had told the Fan Morning Show he was pursuing Pitt All-American and Rutgers assistant Brandin Knight, who will remain in New Jersey.

A former assistant at California, Stanford, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Duke and others in 25 years of coaching, Tim O’Toole is the new associate head coach.  The 54-year-old New York native hasn’t been at any job more than three years.

Jeff’s brother, Jason Capel, rounds out the staff.  Jason Capel spent the last four years as a basketball analyst for the ACC Network and ESPN.  Capel was a two-time All-ACC player at North Carolina and head coach at Appalachian State for four seasons.

“One of the biggest lessons I have learned in coaching is to surround yourself with great people,” said Jeff Capel in a statement from Pitt. “I am excited about the makeup of this staff. Tim is a high-energy coach with terrific recruiting connections and a great basketball mind. Jason shares those qualities as well and is obviously someone who immediately understands me and my vision of how to build a program. Each of these coaches will serve as great representatives for the University of Pittsburgh and will be excellent mentors to the student-athletes we recruit, develop and lead.”
