PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- It was reported by multiple sources yesterday that the Penguins plan to sign defenseman Jack Johnson to a 5-year deal worth just over $3 million per year when free agency officially begins on Sunday at noon.

Johnson is an NHL vet that spent five and a half seasons with the Los Angeles Kings and the past six and a half seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. At his height, Johnson was a 30 point scorer, even having two seasons in which he scored 40 or more. He is pals with Sidney Crosby, to boot. But, he is coming off his worst statistical season of his career in which he only mustered 11 points in 77 games and finished the year a minus six. He was even a healthy scratch for Columbus' playoff series against Washington.

The Fan Morning Show talked about his potential signing and were a little surprised by the split in feedback. Some Penguins fans were all about the signing, citing not only his past success in the league but general manager Jim Rutherford's past success in signing free agents and making moves to bring players to make a difference to the roster.

Other fans ripped Rutherford and the organization for the reported move, saying the two-time Stanley Cup winning GM was making a huge mistake by bringing him in and locking him in for five years. They said he is too slow, that his game has completely fallen off and that the Penguins are foolish to put any money into him, let alone sign him to a five-year contract.

Colin Dunlap likes the Johnson deal, saying that assistant coach Sergei Gonchar can work his magic with him much like he did with Jamie Oleksiak and Justin Schultz. He believes the five years is inconsequential because they can always dump him before the contract is set to expire much like the Capitals just did with Brooks Orpik. Jim Colony is skeptical of the move but doesn't hate it. The recent fall-off is concerning but Jim Rutherford also deserves teh benefit of the doubt and then some for all the work he's done here in Pittsburgh.

As always, it seems rational thoughts are few and far between on this signing and it was the subject of our daily Twitter poll. It started out as a virtual split, but as the day goes on more and more people are jumping on board with the move.
