PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - It was a historic weekend at PNC Park for the Pirates. The Bucs became the first team to complete a five-game sweep since August 2006 when the Yankees won five straight against the Red Sox.

Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco not only hit back-to-back home runs in the first game but then did it again in the second. Only two other duos have done that in baseball history, one of them being Pirates Dick Groat and Frank Thomas on July 7, 1957 against the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds.

After the Dodgers and Phillies both scored 17 runs on the Bucs in the same week and the team hit a season low 8 games under .500, it seemed like it was only a matter of time till a fire sale would sweep through the roster.

But baseball is a funny sport and here we are at the All-Star break and the Bucs are now only one game under .500 after a brutal June.

There are plenty of fans that will stick with their guns and continue to shun the team due to ownership and management decisions and I have my grievances too, but I am going to enjoy this while I can.

Admittedly baseball is my favorite sport. I could watch hours and hours of baseball and baseball related programs. Growing up, “This Week In Baseball” and the Ken Burns’ Documentary “Baseball” were watched and re-watched until the VCR tape wore out, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have been, and will always be my favorite team.

I suffered through the 20 losing seasons like everyone else and we could very well be on the way toward another long stretch, but instead of complaining about roster moves and who we should’ve kept, I’m going to keep watching and listening and hope this team continues to do well.

Will they? The odds are against them but no matter what happens at the end of the season, winning the past eight of nine, especially the five-game sweep of the Brewers is special.

You don’t see five-game sweeps. You don’t see two players go back-to-back twice in the same day. You don’t often see a team come from behind twice in two straight innings and win it with double over the center fielder’s head, in the pouring rain, with a bolt of lightning in the distance. It just doesn’t happen, and all in the same weekend!

So yes, while I am concerned about the upcoming decisions facing the Pirates’ management and see why so many fans feel betrayed by ownership, I’m going to enjoy reflecting on the past week of Pirates baseball during this all-star break.

I mean how can you call yourself a baseball fan and not get goosebumps watching this: You can almost hear "The Natural" theme playing in the background.
