Bradenton, FL (93.7 The Fan) - The Pirates on Friday wrapped up part one of spring training with a final workout at Pirate City before moving the major league portion of camp to Lecom Park.

"Phase one, check, completed.  Good energy, good work.  Time to play," said manager Clint Hurdle, who's pleased with what he saw since February 13. "We checked off all the boxes, intentionally, that we had here on things to get done.  I think we were efficient with our time.  I think we were intentional with our time, and I give the players all the credit for the energy and the focus they brought to everything they did.  From the bullpens to the live BP sessions the effort the hitters put into those, the fielding drills, the baserunning drills, all of it.  It was done very professionally."

Hurdle also had strong words of praise for one of the non-roster players in camp after Garth Brooks went through his final workout with the team.

"He was a welcome addition to camp, as I shared with our team and I shared with Garth," Hurdle said.  "The respect and passion he has for the game, it stood above everything else while he was out here. We folded him in.  This wasn't a distraction. He was embraced  by the team.  I thought it went very well.  I know the players appreciated it."

Hurdle allowed Brooks to address the squad prior to the workout, and he was applauded afterward.

Steven Brault, who had Brooks autograph his guitar and who is in the running for a spot in the rotation or the bullpen, will start Saturday's first Grapefruit League game vs the Phillies in Clearwater.  Beyond that, Hurdle wouldn't say who will pitch or even who is making the trip.

"I can't remember it, there's too many names," Hurdle said. "My focus has been so many other places."

Hurdle did say they have a plan mapped out for Jung Ho Kang, that he'll play more than a typical veteran.  He is scheduled to be in the lineup Sunday when the Pirates face the Marlins at Lecom Park.

The Saturday and Sunday games will be on 93.7 The Fan at 1:05 pm each day.
