PG Beat Writer Jason Mackey Making Switch From Penguins To Pirates

'I love baseball, I’ve been around it my entire life, it’s my first love'

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - A familiar face around The Fan is making the jump from covering the Penguins to covering the Pirates.

Post-Gazette writer Jason Mackey announced Tuesday he will “very soon” be replacing current Pirates beat writer Bill Brink who is moving into a new role as the PG’s sports enterprise and sports business reporter.

“I love baseball, I’ve been around it my entire life, it’s my first love,” Mackey told The Fan.

Mackey added it wasn’t an easy decision but it was a move he knew he needed to make.

“I’ve been wrestling with the idea and ultimately I realize I’m leaving some stuff behind being with the Penguins, but I believe in taking chances and doing different things to stay creative and this has always been a passion of mine,” said Mackey.

“I needed to do it for my own father, Fred, who passed away last March. Baseball was what we shared more than anything, even hockey. He was my first coach, my best coach, and in a way it feels like we’re doing this together,” Mackey wrote on Medium.com.

Mackey also took time to thank the Penguins coaches and players, specifically Sidney Crosby, Matt Murray, Matt Cullen, Mike Sullivan and GM Jim Rutherford, saying they are “five of the best people I’ve ever dealt with — and not just in hockey.”
