Stephen Jones Denies Contacting Sean Payton About Cowboys' Head Coaching Job

ARLINGTON (105.3 The Fan) - Cowboys COO Stephen Jones has denied contacting Saints head coach Sean Payton through back channels to gauge his interest in taking over for Jason Garrett.

Jones made the denial during his bi-weekly appearance Monday on 105.3 The Fan.

"Yes. That's just untrue," Jones said when asked by the K&C Masterpiece if he wanted to dispel the report. "Obviously, we don't comment on rumors like that. Everybody knows what we think of Jason. If anything, we've been criticized to a fault for what we do think of him. He just did a great job getting this team back on track yesterday, and we're focused on beating the Eagles."

105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher confirmed Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network's report about their interest in Payton last offseason and suggested that the Jones' should pursue him again this offseason.

‪Ian Rapoport notes that Dallas' interest may have helped to fuel the eventual five-year extension the Saints gave Payton. And of course, Payton's decision to remain in New Orleans - where he holds enormous power - triggered the Cowboys' decision to stick with coach Jason Garrett for one more season ... without an extension.‬

The Dallas Cowboys head coach search has already begun, with a visit with Urban Meyer and Jerry's open mention of college coaches Lincoln Riley and Matt Rhule.
