PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- U.S. Senator for Pennsylvania Pat Toomey is participating in a roundtable discussion Thursday to discuss the idea and possibility of playing youth sports this summer. Joining him is former Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, former softball superstar Jennie Finch and other medical professionals.

Toomey joined The Fan Morning Show ahead of this conversation Thursday morning to expound on what the consultation may entail.

"This virus is just not a threat to kids. It's really remarkable, actually. It's really very much a disease of older people and people with compromised immune systems, people who have some kind of underlying illness.

Those two categories constitute the vast majority of deaths from this disease and fortunately, the vast majority of kids are not in either of those categories. So, we can do this."

Toomey touched on the salient role youth sports plays in a child's life and why it's so vital to try to get them back for this summer.

"One of the greatest softball stars of all-time, Jennie Finch, Olympic gold medal winner, professional softball player, she's going to talk about how in her own personal life, but also with the kids she has mentored, how important it is to have team sports. To give kids a chance to be outside playing, learning about teamwork, learning about good sportsmanship, learning about accomplishing something, setting a goal and working hard and getting better at it.

It's incredibly important for kids. It's extremely constructive. When you don't have some of the other normal social activities for kids like everything to do with school, it becomes all the more important. So, no question in my mind, Little League baseball and softball for girls, team sports generally for kids is just really, really good for them and really helpful."
