For as much as Ryan Shazier says he needs his teammates as he dreams to return to football after last December’s spinal injury, his Steelers teammates also need him.

“It’s a guy that you know cares a lot about it,” said Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward.  “A guy you don’t want to let down.  It doesn’t matter what position you play, you want to see Ryan succeed and you want to succeed for Ryan.”

Heyward said Shazier is at all of the organized team activities and works his rehabilitation schedule around team workouts.

“It’s been awesome,” Heyward said.  “Ryan is a guy that has inspired a lot of people and he’s been battling all of his life.  You see him battle back.  You see him continue to work and him just being around.  That’s not only huge for us but huge for him.”

“I honestly felt that being around here made it more helpful for me just being able to see my teammates practice and play, being able to study film and learn about the whole ins-and-outs of the organization,” Shazier said.

Linebacker Tyler Matakevich could be the guy to replace Shazier in the middle of the defense, saying Shazier will answer any and every question he has.

“At the end of the day, I don’t just want to pressure myself on people,” Shazier said.  “I always tell them if you ever need knowledge from me or need anything from me.  I’m one call away.  You always can make yourself better or the team better by giving all that you have.”

“Every single step I take, every time I’m here with these guys, every time somebody comes to talk to me I try to keep a positive mindset.  You just have to appreciate every single moment that you are in because you take things for granted that you might not think you take for granted.”

“Where he was at, to where he is now, it’s just a blessing,” Matakevich said.  “It gives you goose bumps when you think about it just knowing where he was.  It honestly is just amazing.”
