PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Penguins got word Tuesday that the team’s top scorer Jake Guentzel is essentially done for the season after having shoulder surgery.

The good news is that their captain appears to be on his way back, sort of.

Sidney Crosby, who has been out of action since early November with an injury to his core, practiced with the team Tuesday in a non-contact jersey.

Crosby had surgery to repair a sports hernia.

It’s unclear when Crosby will return to game action and said after the skate his participation had to do with timing.

He will continue to skate on his own but says he is getting stronger every day.

In 17 games this season, Crosby has five goals and 12 assists.

The Pens return to action on Thursday when the San Jose Sharks come to PPG Paints Arena.

Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
