PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback thinks the Steelers should go after Cam Newtown if he is still available in the summer.

While he doesn’t fault the Steelers for bringing back QB Mason Rudolph to backup Ben Roethlisberger, he thinks the team needs to look at other options.

“I think the time has come for them to start taking shots on these sorts of (veteran) guys,” said Breer on the Fan Morning Show Tuesday.

Breer adds it’s better to have someone on the roster that can backup Ben in the future rather than being forced to draft a quarterback in the offseason.

“That’s how Christian Ponder winds up going 12th overall, that’s how E.J. Manuel winds up going in the first round when you decided you have to get it done in a single offseason.”

“If Cam Newton is still hanging out there in the middle of July like maybe he’s the guy you take a shot on . . . and that could cause some issues internally but maybe he’s the guy you bring in and say to Cam, ‘okay come into our building, let us work with you for a year and we’ll see where this is at the end of the. .. 2020 season’,” said Breer.

Breer points to the moves the New Orleans Saints the past couple years trading for Teddy Bridgewater and now signing Jameis Winston.
