PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Pirates Top Prospect/SP Mitch Keller joins the Fan Morning Show Monday morning to discuss the beginning to his first big league camp and adjustments he is making this Spring.

"The only difference is being around all the big league guys and the starting crew that we have," said Keller.  "It's been a really good experience so far just to workout and be with those guys."

Keller explains how Jameson Taillon has been one of the mentors for the young pitchers coming up through the system.

"He's (Taillon) has always been a really good dude," said Keller.  "He's always included me by asking me questions and he's always been on standby watching my pen and giving feedback with what he can give."

Keller says it's a good feeling to have the veterens on the Pirates pitching staff take the young guys underneath their wings and help them out where they can.

They discuss what the jump from each level of the system has been like and what is the biggest hurdle to jump at each level.

"Just the experience of hitters, you have a bunch of big league guys that are down in AAA," said Keller.  "Whether that is injury or just trying to refine their skills to get back to major league ready."

Mitch Keller weighs in on what it is like coming up through the Pirates minor league system and what the pitching coaches work on with them and how they don't make any drastic changes and just take what you have and run with it.  The catchers also play a big role and he puts a lot of trust in them when he first gets to each level and starts building a relationship with them.

"I'm going to put my trust in them my first couple starts and then go from there and just do what I see and usually it lines up with what they see," said Keller.  "We work really well with all our catchers here, have really good conversation and have a lot of trust in them."

Chris and Jim wrap up the interview with Mitch Keller discussing the next group of prospects who are on the verge of joining the big club.

"We're always talked to like we are the next wave," said Keller.  "We know we're the next wave coming up and are ready to make an impact and help this team win a World Series."

He says it's a really cool group to be a part of and how they interact with each other and the relationship with the veterans already on the club is one that they all realize they can make an impact and do special things as a group as a whole.  Even though he is so close to the big leagues right now, Keller says it's not hard to be patient because he realizes he still has stuff that he can fine tune and work on before getting to the majors.

The first full squad workout for the Pirates is Monday in Bradenton and the first Spring Training game is Saturday afternoon in Clearwater against the Phillies and you can listen to the game on 93.7 The Fan at 1 pm.
