Penguins, Riverhounds, Pirates, Pitt Softball and Baseball All Were In Action

The Penguins returned to action in Toronto Saturday Night against the Maple Leafs and Toronto jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the 1st period on goals from Kapanen and Kadri.  The Maple Leafs made it 3-0 on a Power Play goal midway through the 2nd peiod from Kadri and the Penguins thought they had a goal a few minutes later, but it was called back for Goalie Interference against Brian Dumoulin.  Toronto had a 4 on 3 power play after the Dumoulin penalty and they took advantage making it 4-0 heading to the 2nd intermission on a goal from Marner.  The Penguins made the game interesting late in the 3rd period on goals by Crosby and Hornqvist a little more than a minute apart. But, Toronto added an empty netter from Marleau for a final score of 5-2 in favor of the Maple Leafs.  The Penguins are right back in action Sunday night at PPG Paints Arena as they host the Dallas Stars at 7:30 pm.

Thirteen more college basketball teams won their conference tournaments and punched their tickets to the NCAA Tournament with victories Saturday.  Six more conference champions will punch their tickets to the tournament tomorrow on Selection Sunday before the brackets get revealed at 6 pm on TBS.

After 3 Rounds at the Valspar Championship in Florida, Corey Conners is at the top of the leaderboard at 9 under.  Justin Rose, Tiger Woods and Brandt Snedeker are Tied for 2nd at 8 under.  Other notable players in the field are Patrick Reed at 6 under and tied for fifth and Ryan Palmer at 5 under and tied for 7th.  Final Round Coverage of the Valspar Championship Sunday will be on Golf Channel from 1-3 pm and NBC from 3-6 pm.

It was not a good day for the Pirates Saturday as they lost both their split squard matchups, losing 13-5 to Baltimore in Sarasota and 15-1 to Atlanta in Bradenton.  Colin Moran was 2 for 2 against Atlanta and is now batting .360 this Spring.  Jose Osuna hit his second HR of the Spring against Baltimore.  The Pirates take on the Blue Jays tomorrow and you can listen to the game here on The Fan starting at 1 pm.

The Pitt Baseball team was also in action Saturday as they were in Blacksburg for a doubleheader against Virginia Tech. Liam Sabino hit his 6th HR of the season but the Panthers fell in Game One, 3-1.  In Game Two of the doubleheader, Pitt was able to rebound to beat Virginia Tech 15-10.  David Yanni was 3 for 5 with a HR and 2 RBI in the second game.  Pitt Baseball is now 11-4 on the season and in 4th place in the ACC Coastal Division.

The Pitt Softball team is down in Florida this weekend for the Panthers Weekend Tournament in Boca Raton.  The Panthers fell to Michigan 3-2 in Game One and fell to Rutgers 7-5 in Game Two on Saturday.  They are now 13-9-1 on the season and in 3rd place in the ACC Coastal Division.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC hosted Penn FC down at Highmark Stadium for their 8th Preseason game.  The Riverhounds SC won the game 3-2 behind goals from Kerr, Holland and Romeo.  The Riverhounds SC close out the Preseason against Villanova next Saturday March 17 at Highmark Stadium at 1:30 before opening up the regular season in Nashville on March 24.  Pittsburgh's Home Opener is March 31 against Penn FC at Highmark Stadium.

Also, Pitt Football opens up Spring Practice on Monday. The Spring Game this season is Saturday April 14 at 1 pm at Heinz Field.
