PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Starling Marte was traded by the Pirates to Arizona Monday, making Gregory Polanco the last player remaining from the Pirates playoff years.

The former Bucs’ centerfielder released a statement Monday afternoon expressing his thanks to Pittsburgh.

“I will be eternally grateful for the support that the Pittsburgh community has given me since I arrived at the club. I want to thank the fans for these memorable years. Thanks to the Pirates' organization for giving me the opportunity, and to my teammates thanks for the support.”

The Pirates acquired infielder Liover Peguero and pitcher Brennan Malone along with an additional $250,000 in international money.

The 19-year-old Peguero is considered Arizona’s fifth best prospect according to FanGraphs and is 7th by Baseball America.

Malone, also 19, was named Arizona’s 10th best prospect by FanGraphs and 9th by Baseball America.

“We’re excited about adding two young players of this caliber and the opportunity we’ll have to help them continue to grow.” said Cherington. “In addition, we now have a greater ability to acquire impact type talent in this year’s international free agent market.

“We have a foundation of talent in Pittsburgh and in our system that we feel will be a key part of our success. We also know that we need more of it if we are going to realistically be able to compete deep into September and October,” added Cherington.
