PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) – James Conner said he’s seen enough football and wasn’t upset the Steelers drafted and added running backs this off-season, rather he’s in favor of it.

“That’s how you win games is with depth,” Conner said.  “If you look around the league, a lot of good teams have multiple running backs.”

So when the Steelers picked a University of Kentucky tailback who tied or set 14 school records, Conner said he was cool with the addition of Benny Snell.

“I was like ok, I know in his college he had great numbers,” Conner said.  “I know he can play, so I’m excited.”

Last year Conner rushed for 973 yards with the next closest was the 256 yards from Jaylen Samuels and then Ben Roethlisberger with 98.  That last number really speaks to the lack of depth and why the Steelers drafted Snell and added Travon McMillen, Ralph Webb and Malik Williams to join Trey Edmunds.

“There is going to be no drop off,” Conner added.  “That’s how you win games is with depth.  A lot of guys like to play.”

Having just turned 24 a few days ago, Conner is another of the new young leaders in the Steelers locker room.

“Leadership is something that just happens,” Conner said.  “It’s really not something that ‘this year I will do this’.  I just go about my business, when I can help somebody (I will).  I just play my role, if it’s a leader role, than that’s it.”

Conner is happy that almost everyone attended the first week of the team’s organized team activities on the South Side.  Saying he and others have enjoyed being able to knock the rust off, improve their conditioning and just get to know each other.

“I think its important building comradery with each other,” Conner said.  “Like Coach T always says ‘the first road to getting better is showing up’.  With all of us being here, running over plays we will use in the season.  I think it will help us in the long run.”
