PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) – While he addressed the issues with his kicker and the health of his quarterback, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also promised changes on defense.

“We need to do a better job of finishing things at the point of attack,” Tomlin said Tuesday.  “We were in position in a lot of those plays.  They made the combat catches and we didn’t.”

Tomlin gave credit to Oakland for making plays Sunday and quarterback Derek Carr for making some great throws, adding his defense didn’t stand-up in the crucial moment.

“We have to look at all reasons,” Tomlin said.  “What we are doing as coaches in terms of putting those guys in position to take advantage of those opportunities.  Who we utilize and the details in which they are working.

Tomlin is open to all possibilities in an effort to change.

“We are not going to do, we are not going to hope and wish,” Tomlin added.  “We are not going to go through our processes in the manner in which we have and hope the outcome changes.”

“It doesn’t mean we are going to do things dramatically different, but we aren’t going to sit on our hands.  We aren’t going to hope.  That’s not what professionals do, particularly ones in the position that we’re in.  We are going to actively seek victory.  We are going to actively seek the change necessary to change the outcome of a few plays which will thus change the outcome of a game.”

Tomlin called football a complex game, saying when there are consistent failures its usually a multitude of things and not one leading to their issues.

“I don’t want to lead you to believe that the changes are going to be dramatic and maybe even noticeable to the naked eye,” Tomlin said.  “But in our world, very much necessary and very much significant, often times you make very subtle changes and they have very significant outcomes.”

They better, Tom Brady and Drew Brees are up next, probably wiping saliva off their lips while watching Steelers game film.
