PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- "Happy Opening Day!"

That's how Pirates starting pitcher Trevor Williams greeted The Fan Morning Show Thursday when he joined the guys to talk about the 2019 season.

Williams is looking to build off an impressive second half of the 2018 season in which he went 7-3 with a 1.38 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 71.2 IP.

"Last year at the end of the year, that year is over. I'm hoping to pick up where I left off," said Williams. "You can only do better or you can do worse. I did everything this offseason and this Spring Training to prepare my brain to prepare my body to do better and give the team a chance to win every time it's called upon me."

Williams talked about varying his arsenal for this season while maintaining what worked for him in 2018.

"You're constantly adjusting, you're constantly tinkering and trying to get better. The curveball for me is still my 4th best pitch and I'm not going to get beat on my 4th best pitch or my 2nd best pitch or my 3rd best pitch," said Williams. "If the game calls for a curveball, then we're going to throw a curveball but if the game doesn't call for a curveball and on Saturday (when Williams makes his first start of the season) I don't throw a curveball, then it will be really ok. I'm just adding to my repertoire and adding to my tool belt and hopefully when the game does call for it I execute it and it helps us get a win."

William maintained really a ridiculous level of consistency in the second half last year and talked about how he approaches each start to maximize his "stuff."

"You just have to 'take your temperature' that start and see what's working in the bullpen and then the first few hitters you're going to know what you've got that day and what you don't have. It's a testament to Cervy [Francisco Cervelli] he'll know before I know most of the time. We'll kind of just roll with it. You're going to get 32 starts in a regular season and 5 of those starts you're going to feel great and another 5 you're going to feel horrible and the rest in between you've got to figure it out."

"You're hoping that you're feeling awesome and all 4, 5 or 6 of your pitches are there every start but in reality that's not going to happen. You have to adjust as the game is going on. If your fastball's there in the 1st and 2nd inning it's not always going to be there in the 5th, 6th or 7th. You just have to roll with it. You're trying to put the ball where you want to and you're trying to out-execute the other starting pitcher and my gameplan is you miss the barrel of the bat and hope one of the seven guys behind you catches the ball."

Williams realizes that he is competing in a very competitive NL Central that will likely be a fight to the end.

"I think it is [the deepest in baseball] because we see the Central every week it seems like. With our division, I feel like any one of the five teams can win the division and any one of the five can finish last. It's going to be a fun season and it's going to be a fun division to follow throughout the year because it's going to be a tight race I believe until the very end."

"The Cincinnati Reds are a great ball club, they had a great lineup last year and they've only supplemented to that this year and they've enhanced and gotten better. But so have we."
