Neal Huntington Has Decisions To Make As The Trade Deadline Draws Near

Bob Nightengale Warns The Pirates Of The Damage They'd Do To Their Fan Base If They Became Seller

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - With the Pirates the hottest team in baseball winning 9-in-a-row and getting back into the wild card race, General Manager Neal Huntington has some hard decisions to make with the July 31st trade deadline looming.

USA Today MLB Columnist Bob Nightengale joined The Starkey and Mueller Show to talk about the trade deadline, what he thinks the Pirates could do and a word of advice about what not to do.

"You can't sell" without alienating your fan base, Nightengale warned.

As for what he thinks they will do, Nightengale doesn't expect much...for now.

"I get the feeling that they're going to hold tight...I don't think you can buy for a rental, especially if you're just going for a wild card spot, so I think they may stay pat and then maybe see what's out there in August because we're going to see a lot of guys clear waivers."

As for competing for the wild card, Bob gave us a number he thinks teams will have to reach to be in contention.

"Minimum of 86,  I would think"
