Weekly Chat With Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk

Nova Throwing Off Flat Ground, Kang Progressing

May 30, 2018 - 7:26 pm

Every Wednesday during the season the media meets with Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk for all the latest injury updates and here is what we learned this afternoon.

Ivan Nova resumed playing catch on flat ground on Tuesday, but still has some time before he needs to throw off a slope to prepare for a sim game or rehab start.

"In the coming days as we prepare him (Nova) to come off the disabled list there will be various checked boxes he needs to make," said Tomcyzk.  "If he's comfortable throwing all his pitches effectively, if he's controlling it with more conviction.  Ivan was the last person who wanted to go on the disabled list with this, he wanted to continue to fight through it, but after numerous conversations he unselfishly wanted to do what was best for the team."

Jung Ho Kang remains in extended Spring Training as he prepares to take the next steps to returning to full game action.

"Jung Ho Kang is still in his Spring Training build up, he is at the phase where we have most postion players begin multiple and consecutive games played," said Tomczyk.  "This week we envision him (Kang) playing in back to back with an off day and then three days in a row to see how his body responds to that."

Other Names On The DL or On the Mend:

Enny Romero remains at the Florida program in Bradenton and the Pirates anticipate him throwing a full side in the coming days

A.J Schugel is 3-4 weeks post the injection from Dr. Andrews and is continuing his rehab exercises to prepare to throw

Felipe Vasquez was back on the mound Tuesday night and he is all good after the left forearm tightness scare earlier in the week
