PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- It was the first time the Steelers had lost a game when leading by 14 or more points at home. Ever. (220-1-2)

So things had to go wrong along the way, right? Now, we're left to play the blame game.

The Fan Morning Show shuffled through the many reasons why the Steelers ended up on the wrong sides of things Monday morning and two issues seemed to rise to the top: lack of defensive adjustments and officiating.

Let's tackle the first.

Chargers receiver Keenan Allen ended up with 14 receptions for 148 yards and a touchdown on 19 targets. As Chris Mack pointed out, 9 of those came with linebackers covering him. Allen shredded Steelers coverage all night, yet defensive coordinator Keith Butler continued to let his linebackers try to run with Allen in the slot and continue to get torched.

It seemed to Chris and to Colin Dunlap that Chargers offensive coordinator (and former Steelers OC) Ken Whisenhunt just plain out-schemed Butler and made the necessary adjustment at halftime to exploit the Steelers defense in the second half. Butler never responded and the Chargers went wild.

The second...the officiating.

Normally the guys are loathed to say the officiating made a huge difference in the game but in this case it's hard not to.

A blatantly missed false start that resulted in a Chargers touchdown on a play that should have been blown dead. A phantom holding call on guard Ramon Foster that took away a 22 yard run from James Conner in the third quarter as the Steelers were pulling away. A missed block in the back call on Brian Allen on a Chargers punt return touchdown. Even a questionable offsides call on the first game-winning field goal attempt in which LA kicker Michael Badgley missed.

Those were all huge plays in the game. All potential turning points. All things that led to the Steelers loss.

The guys recognize that at the end of the day, the Steelers defense needed to make a stop but their lack of adjustments along with the poor officiating were the main reasons for the loss.

What do you think?
