PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Martz says there could be some friction between Ben Roethlisberger and new quarterbacks coach Matt Canada this season.

Martz says Roethlisberger’s “larger than life figure for young coaches and I think the biggest issue is his dominance as a personality.”

With the Steelers offense looking stale at times last year, Martz says it’s important that Big Ben gets out of his comfort zone and that he may not be willing to listen to Canada.

“You’ve got to get him out of his comfort zone and get him into a situation where he is willing to try some different things . . . maybe some quicker throws some of those things that will actually help his career and help them win.”

Martz believes the team’s offense has got into a “rut” in recent season and that Roethlisberger would be better if he would be willing to try different things.

“Now to convince him of that, maybe it’s easy, maybe it’s not easy, I don’t know but I think he needs to do that,” said Martz.

Martz says that there doesn’t need to be conflict but it’s important to have a clear message and that he explain his plan to Roethlisberger and why he thinks that plan will be the most successful.
