Steelers linebacker Vince Williams is letting his play do the talking. Literally. He just is not going to talk much this season.

He made that clear in July.

So when Williams got a new, four-year contract extension from Pittsburgh this week he was, as expected, pretty quiet on it.

“It feels great,” Williams said, quite abruptly, after the Steelers’ 16-6 win over Tennessee at Heinz Field Saturday.

Williams has been all over the field in the preseason, making plays and, surprisingly for an inside linebacker, getting to the quarterback. He had four tackles and a sack Saturday.

Pass rushing is something he has been able to add to his game, resulting in eight sacks in 2017.

“Vince’s story is a Steeler story,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “This is a guy who was a later round draft pick that’s earned his way into this thing. First as a special teams contributor and then as a special teams contributor and a defender.

“So it’s just fun to watch him go through the natural maturation process that we aspire all these guys to go through. He’s answered the bell at every turn and continued to grow.”

Williams’ new deal is worth over $20 million through the four years, keeping him in Pittsburgh through 2021. The security is not only good for Williams, but the team as well, as inside linebacker is a point of weakness for the Steelers after the injury to Ryan Shazier in December.

“He’s an easy guy to do business with and so we’re excited that we’re going to continue to do business with him,” Tomlin added. “He’s deserving of it.”
