PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - He started coming into his own last year hitting 26 home runs and often times anchoring the lineup, but that wasn't nearly enough for first baseman Josh Bell.

While covering the team at Spring Training, our Chris Mueller caught up with Bell to talk about his rookie season, what he worked on this offseason and expectations for the upcoming season.

"I like to think of myself as more than a .250 hitter, so that's what I'm focused on right now," Bell said.  "I had a pretty rough couple of first months with K's and stuff like that and kind of found my stride.  So hopefully I can start off stronger this year."

There weren't many questions heading into last year about Bell's bat, but as he continued the transition to first base, there were questions about his ability to field the position.

We found out that in an effort to shore things up defensively, Bell showed up a month early for Spring Training and was asked about putting in that time.

"It was just an opporunity to get started early," Bell told Chris.  "It was an opportunity to kind of start Spring Training the way I wanted to last year."

With Andrew McCutchen no longer in the middle of the lineup and serving as the leader of the club, Bell looks to be one of the logical choices to fill those roles but told Chris he hasn't given much thought to that..

"For the most part, I'm just focused on getting my work done every day.  I feel like that's just the person that I am.  If I can get my work done, it just adds to the confidence and get to a point to where I have that leadership role, then I'm all happy for it, but I definitely want to earn it."

Be sure to listen to the full interview to hear the one player on the roster that Bell is most intrigued to see play this year given his potential.
